Alleppey has two seasons that matter to a houseboat traveller: the dry, breezy stretch from October through March, and the green-soaked monsoon from June through August. Each has a personality. Here's a month-by-month breakdown.
October – November: shoulder season
Just after the monsoon. Lakes are full, banks are green, and rates haven't peaked. Birds are starting to arrive at Kumarakom. Light cotton clothing during the day, a thin layer at night.
December – February: peak season
Cool mornings, warm afternoons, dry. This is when most international travellers visit. Book at least eight weeks in advance. Sunsets are the cleanest of the year — orange and pink without humidity haze.
March: late peak
Warmer, but still very pleasant on the water where the breeze takes the edge off. Boat availability improves and rates start to soften.
June – August: the green months
Monsoon. The drama is real — full lakes, dramatic skies, intense green everywhere — but also wet decks, occasional shutdowns, and limited routes. Half the rate. Worth it if you love rain.
