Best Time to Visit Alleppey for a Houseboat Holiday

By MyAlleppey Team

Kerala's backwaters are beautiful in every season, but timing your houseboat holiday right can make all the difference.

October to February is peak season. The post-monsoon skies clear to a brilliant blue, the waterways are full, and temperatures sit comfortably between 22°C and 32°C. Book well in advance as houseboats fill quickly during December and January.

March to May is the pre-monsoon period. It's hotter and more humid, but rates are lower and the backwaters are less crowded. Early mornings and evenings are especially pleasant on the water.

June to September is the monsoon. Rain falls heavily, but the backwaters come alive — waterfalls spill into the canals, the paddy fields turn an electric green, and the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place in August. Many travellers consider the monsoon the most dramatic and atmospheric time to visit.

Our pick for most visitors: October to February for the classic experience, or August if you want to catch the boat races.
